Of His Fulness

The human mind finds it impossible to process that God never had a beginning like we know every thing else does. God is eternal, and lives beyond the domain that confines us to time and space. So, we try to imagine the vastness of the universe and by faith we know that God created that! Our mind boggles at the thought and yet it is true. Perhaps we can just about grasp the fact that it was He who created the Earth and everything that is in it … including you and me.

But some ask the question, which perhaps comes from an unbelieving mindset: “Who created God?” But it is an honest question nonetheless, because we are finite people living in a finite environment. It is illogical to our minds that God has always been there. He has always existed, so unlike everything else we know, He never had a beginning and will never have an end.

And we as God’s believing people can be eternally glad about that!

Such an enormous thought brings into perspective the fact that we are not just here to live out our little lives and die without purpose! God takes great pleasure in His creation and delights in those who were created in His image.

He has a divine purpose for every aspect of His creation including mankind. God’s character is expressed in limited form in people. Each one has the capability to love, or to hate. To experience joy, and sorrow. To be energised, or to grow weary. We have the need for company, relationship as well as the need for solitude at times. We have these emotions because God has emotions also.

He has the desire for fellowship with the people He has created, and that priceless intimate relationship with each one individually. Such a thought is humbling considering how great He really is!

Because it is sin that has spoiled that potential joy of being so close to Him, He has demonstrated His immense love beyond our understanding, reaching out to us in our need in order to restore that relationship that was lost so long ago.

God in the Person of the Lord Jesus came into the world to be the remedy for our dilemma. None other than He, could save lost sinners separated from the love of God! Through Him, and Him alone, the free access into the very presence of God is granted and gloriously able.

The Bible tells us something so precious about His beloved Son:

“It pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell.”
Colossians 1: 19

“For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.”
Colossians 2: 9

If we find it hard to grasp the immensity of God, then try and see if we could possibly grasp that Jesus Christ is the embodiment of all that is God. As the above verse tells us: all of the fulness of God is encapsulated in the human body of the precious One we know as Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

This demonstrates to us how great was the length He went to, to reach out to His creation who is estranged from Him because of inherited sin.

We cannot reach God in our sin defiled state, so He reached out to us!

Yes, it is true that we are separated from God because of our sin, and if we die in that state we will be separated from Him forever. (Hell is our default destination!) Yes, it is true that: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” (1 Timothy 1: 15) And yes, it is true that: “repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 20: 21), will save us from hell and give to us a home in heaven to look forward to, but … there is more, so much more that God is doing here than these wonderful things.

God desires people like you and me
 to live in the good of knowing Him personally!

There is so much in Him to discover and enjoy here and now that we don’t have to wait until we get to heaven to find out. And here is something from the heart of God that will delight your soul. If we found it impossible to process the greatness of Almighty God, and we can just about wrap our mind around the fact that God in all of His fulness is in His Son. How about dwelling on the idea that it is God who desires for us to be filled with His fulness also!

The Apostle Paul wrote:

“For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,
That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory,
to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;
And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge,
that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
Ephesians 3: 17-19

How can we best understand this amazing truth for God’s believing people? May I suggest that this is the reason why the beloved Lord Jesus has been given so many names?!

Everything that the soul could ever be in need of or long for is found in Jesus who is the fulness of God in a body! He is sufficient in all things and in Him can we be truly satisfied.

Are we anxious? - He is our Confidence. Are we lonely? - He is our Friend. Are we weary? - He is our Rest & our Strength. Are we out of resources? - He is our Provider. Are we lost? - He is the Good Shepherd. Are we in darkness? - He is the Light. Are we in the wilderness? - He is the Way.

The list is endless, but whatever dilemma we find ourselves in -
Christ is the remedy.

How humbling and indeed a great comfort and encouragement it is to know that our Great God desires to bless His people over and over again with the fulness of every true blessing. And if we were truly honest, we would have to admit that none of us deserve such grace and mercy. This is God in His absolute grace and goodness reaching out to unworthies like ourselves.

The question is … What are we going to do with all He is offering to us?

“… Of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.”
John 1: 16
