What better subject matter can we cover than the Word of God on the first day of the first month of a brand-new year?

Of course the precious Word of God ought to be of paramount importance to us all, but sometimes we let things slip. Perhaps we’re too busy to make the time to allow God to speak to us through His Word. Perhaps our hearts have grown cold, and our interest has waned; something else appears to be more interesting and grabs our attention.

But if we were to but stop and think about where everything comes from that sustains us each day we might realise none of these things ‘just happen’. “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” Matthew 4: 4.

Everything that we have is given to us - because He said so!

All our basic provisions and so much more are ours to enjoy daily by His kind permission. More often than not we take it all for granted.

But then things get a little bit more interesting when we grow to appreciate the fact that we are not only recipients of the goodness of God - because He said so, but everyone of us either owns a copy of the Word of God - a Bible, or can acquire one. And if we do not own a tangible copy of the Bible of our own we can access to one on our Device. How wonderful is that?

We are so honoured and privileged to be able to handle the Word of God and read the sacred words for ourselves. While we have the opportunity we must make every moment count and soak up every word until it all becomes part of our lives.

As we commit ourselves to getting alone to read His Word it doesn’t take too long before we discover that the words that we are reading are sacred, alive, and relevant to our every need at any given moment. The Word of God is full of precious promises, words of comfort, affirmation, encouragement, and wisdom to equip us for whatever we have to face in our daily lives.

If we are fearful there are multitudes of promises to comfort and to give courage. If we are sad, there are plenty more to cheer a heart. If we are confused and do not know what to do in any given circumstance, the Word of God tells us all we need to do is but ask for wisdom and it will be given to us, with no conditions attached! The Word of God tells us about the wonder of prayer and how precious it is. Imagine having a one to one conversation with the most high God! This is every true believer’s privilege.

The Word of God tells us about Himself, about His precious beloved Son, and the reason why He came.

Which leads me to speak about this precious One who is the delight of His Father’s heart.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us…”
    John 1: 1, 14.

All that we have is because God said so! We have the privilege of owning a copy of what God has said for ourselves! But the ultimate of gifts is Himself in the Person of His Son!

Jesus Christ is the essence, the expression, the character, and the fullness of God in a body.

Jesus Christ is the final Word of God to the human race. And those of us who have come to trust Him know how precious He is. He is our trusty, faithful, altogether lovely companion who is with us every moment of every day.

As we open the pages of our Bible we are encountering God, and the more we learn from what we read, the more we learn of Him. Whoever reads the Bible and finds it to be a boring Book has never encountered God the way He wants to be discovered. And if that is the case perhaps you have not yet realised what you need, and haven’t yet discovered the God that the Bible talks about. Keep on reading with a sincere and searching heart and you will discover your need and how sufficient He is to meet your need.

“And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”
    Jeremiah 29: 13.

I was watching a documentary about the Bible a while ago and there were many people who had something interesting to say about different aspects of it; how and when it was written, how it was compiled, how it has been preserved, how it was translated, and how it has affected those who are devoted to it, and much more. One particular participant said something lovely as the documentary closed and I thought I would leave you with this quote because of its endearing and yet challenging content.

“I love the way Psalm 119 unfolds. It is the longest chapter in the Bible and it is all about the Word. And you see there what the Word produces. It produces delight. It produces desire for God. It produces obedience. So sometimes it is helpful to look at a text like Psalm 119 and ask: “What does it look like and what does it feel like? What is the experience of the heart and of the soul that has been captivated by the Word?” You can see that they have seen the Word, they are storing up the Word, they are treasuring God’s Word. They have the greatest sense of delight in it. They are pained when people don’t follow it. It is their greatest longing to obey it. They see God’s character and smile in it. That’s what we want. That’s why having the right view of Scripture matters because without it we are not only going to come to not only wrong conclusions about God, and the Gospels and ourselves, but we won’t think rightly, and we won’t feel rightly. We won’t be the sort of human beings that God made us to be if we don’t take Him at His Word, and understand all that He means for us to know of Himself.”  - Kevin DeYoung

    The Bible

    V_The Bible

This Book contains the mind of God, the condition of man, the way of salvation,
the judgement of sinners and the happiness of believers.

Its teachings are Holy; its laws are binding,
its histories are true and its decisions are unchangeable.

Read it to be wise, believe it to be saved, and practice it to be holy.

It contains light to direct you, food to support you and comfort to cheer you.

It is the traveller's map, the pilot's compass,
the soldier's sword and the Christian's charter.

Here paradise is restored, Heaven opened and the gates of Hell disclosed.

Christ is its grand subject; our good is its design and the glory of God its end.

    Read it slowly, often, prayerfully.
It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure.

It will reward the greatest of labour
and condemn all who trifle with its sacred contents.

It is the Book of books, God's Book.
It is this way God makes Himself known to man.

     2022

2022 could be the very year in which Jesus will come to take His people to His Father’s house as He promised He would in John 14: 1-3.

May you be truly blessed this coming year as one day at a time you move forward. The best way to live with the quiet assurance that all is well with your soul is to trust with all your heart in the precious Son of God who came to save sinners from their sin.

The promise of His continual companionship goes with those who belong to Him by faith, and that could be you!

Now is the very best time to surrender to Him and trust in Him with all your heart, because our beloved Lord Jesus could very well come… Perhaps Today!

    Card Design 2021

I heard in an online broadcast a conversation between a couple of the Lord’s people concerning the lateness of the hour in which we are living, and how frustrating it is that many Christians are either ‘sleepy’, or so eager to get on with life after the Covid crisis that they are not aware of what the Word of God has declared concerning the time and the season we find ourselves in today.

The Lord has clearly spoken and continues to do so but, who is listening? One of the people in the conversation likened it to a time while trying to grab the attention of his little boy, got down on his knees and asked his child to ‘hold my face’. When the child reached out to his Daddy he finally got the little boy’s attention. Perhaps this is what the Lord is doing today - He wants us to wake up or stop tearing around, slow down and ‘hold His face’ as it were, so we are quietened down enough to hear His ‘still small voice’!

If we can only cherish being quiet enough to hear what our beloved Lord wants us to know, then we will understand what it is He wants us to be occupied with in this late hour. Here we all are at the end of 2021, and heading fast into 2022, and the Lord has so orchestrated our times that we should be alive ‘at such a time as this’ not only to see what He is just about to do, but to be found faithfully ‘occupying till He comes’!

The world appears to be spiralling into chaos, and evil is rampant. But let us not be too disheartened, because what we can see going on at every turn is exactly what the Bible described would happen in the ‘end times’. So, even though life can be unpleasant at times, hold on just a little while longer because He is coming! Remember, our Lord said: “In the world ye shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer: I have overcome the world.” John 16: 33. And our beloved ‘Overcomer’ will soon descend from heaven with a shout to deliver us from ‘the wrath to come.’

Therefore, if you happen to be of the ‘sleepy’ type and a little indifferent to the time and season in which we are living, or if you are the busy type with a noisy and cluttered life, or if perhaps if you are feeling downcast and discouraged, look up - there is a loving God within reach who understands with a perfect understanding. Reach out by faith and allow the Lord and Lover of your soul to encourage you, to strengthen you, and to cheer you on the home run, that last stretch of the race before we hear His call to “Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away!” Song of Solomon 2: 10.

And so with this thought in mind with the Lord’s help a song was composed for Christmas and is in the making right now, and soon to be published.

Here’s a taster in the form of the lyrics taken from the song. Enjoy :)

    Hold My Face

A father and his little boy, the two of them alone,
He tried his best to help his playful son to hear his words,
So he captured his attention in a sweet and loving way
Stopping down to where he was and in his warm embrace… this is what he said:

     Refrain
‘Hold my face’… Look at me and hear what I am saying to you.
    ‘Hold my face’… I have something here within my heart with you I want to share;
For I love you, and I want you to treasure all I say.
You must listen close to me to hear - your Daddy’s voice.

Down through all the ages past in many different ways
The Father made his many wishes known upon earth.
But then just one last time He spoke in these closing days,
Through the Person of His Son to those who will give ear… this is what He says:

    Refrain
‘Hold my face’… Look at me and hear what I am saying to you.
    ‘Hold my face’… I have something here within my heart with you I want to share;
For I love you, and I want you to treasure all I say.
You must listen close to me to hear - my ‘still all voice’

From heaven to a manger, then from there to Calvary,
The demonstration of the love of God for you and me.
    The gift of mercy given, but hurry to receive;
For soon there’ll be a time on earth when none will want to hear… and He will speak no more!

     Refrain

“Today if you hear His voice, harden not your hearts.”
    Hebrews 4: 7.

May I take this opportunity to wish all who are visiting a very happy Christmas and all the wisdom and strength you need as we venture into a New Year.

    Merry Christmas!

    10_Oct_The Clock is Ticking
    Courtesy of pixabay.com

Tick Tock, the clock is ticking. Time is moving on and there’s no reversing it! We look around us and see what the passing of time does to the things with which we are familiar - like God’s beautiful creation, like nature wherever we look, and the creations of mankind, like buildings etc.  In fact we only have to look in the mirror and see what the passing of time has done to us! Hmm, perhaps its best to leave that subject well alone :)

But it doesn’t take too much to discern that those tangible things are not the only things that have degenerated with the passing of time. The morals of mankind have degenerated also. The thoughts and intents of the heart of human nature has descended into absolute decline that the world in which we live has become a rather frightening place to live!

In the Book of 2 Timothy we read of what the nature of mankind was predicted to look like in end times, and as you read this rather shaming list of characteristics you will see clearly that this is a description of the characteristics we are seeing today on a daily basis wherever we look:

“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
For men shall be lovers of their own selves,
covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce,
despisers of those that are good,
    Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof…”
    2 Timothy 3: 1-5.

It is as if this depressing list we find in the pages of our Bibles was written just a week or so ago and that the ink hadn’t had time to dry yet!

Of course this sad decline in human character and rapid increase in depravity is because of the departure from the ultimate and absolute truth found in this precious Book. As long as people feel that they are entitled to their own truth, chaos will reign! And God is not the Author of chaos!

The Word of God tells us of future events which must shortly come to pass, and these things are all lined up as it were and just waiting to happen. All the wars and rumours of wars, the lining up of nations against Israel, the breakdown of governments to make way for a one world government, one world economy, and one world religion… a global reset! The Lord Jesus Himself told us what to look out for and said: “When these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.” Luke 21: 28.

And if we are seeing with our own eyes everything getting ready to happen, then how much closer is the event that Christians are looking forward to?

I heard it said once that when you see the shops getting ready for Christmas you know that ‘Thanksgiving Day’ is almost here!

The signs and the seasons are telling us that something is brewing and the lid is about to erupt! And Jesus warned us about these things in order to prepare us all for something that must first take place before this world descends into the judgement and the wrath of God against all who have rejected His Son.

The Lord Jesus Himself promised His disciples just before He went to the cross to die in the place of sinners like you and me, that He was going to come again and receive His people to Himself so we could be where He is. He has been gone a long while preparing a place for us in His Father’s House. How unspeakably wonderful and glorious that place in the Father’s House must be!

This is just the very same thing a bridegroom would have done in the time in which Jesus was recorded saying these comforting words to His beloved followers.

They would have taken bread and wine together, as a covenant was made between them both before witnesses that she would prepare herself for him while he was away preparing a place for her. And at an undisclosed time some time later when everything was ready, the call would go out and he would go forth (usually in the night) to fetch his bride and take her away to be with himself.

So when Jesus was talking with His disciples the following beautiful words, He was speaking as a bridegroom would do to His espoused wife:

“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you.
I go to prepare a place for you.
    And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself;
that where I am, there ye may be also.”
    John 14: 1-3.

This is an amazing promise indeed and ought to comfort the hearts of all God’s dear people - He is coming very soon to call us all away from this sad old world to go to be with Him where He is. He is going to one day soon deliver us from the coming wrath of God that is almost ready to burst upon this Christ rejecting world. It is because of His tremendous goodness that He waits each day for people to repent of their sins and turn to the Saviour and trust in Him fully while they may.

But the clock is ticking, and time is running out! God will not wait forever!

One day the very last person to trust their all to the Lord Jesus will have been counted in and it will be time for Him to come. But if you are not ready right now you need to make sure you are ready straight away; for this is a matter of urgency. You do not know if you have tomorrow! None of us do!

In the book of Jeremiah there is a heart rending statement that ought to challenge anyone who is not yet ready to make sure that all is well with their soul without any further delay:“The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.” Jeremiah 8: 20.

How much time are you prepared to risk wasting before you finally admit before a loving and merciful God, that like us all you are a guilty sinner for whom Christ died? He waits long and patiently for you to admit that you are helpless and hopeless without Him. He waits to bless with cleansing and forgiveness the moment in all sincerity you humble yourself before Him and cry from the bottom of your inmost being: “Lord, be merciful to me, the sinner.” (See Luke 18: 13.)

Dear distant follower of my Beloved Lord Jesus, how much more time are you prepared to waste in frivolous pursuits and/or possibly hiding your identity? Honour Him because He promised He will honour you when you do. May He be the object of your heart’s desire. May His unfathomable and undeserving love cause you to rise up and make every last little moment count; for we really do not know just how many or how few of them are left!

Redeem the time because the days are most certainly evil! (See Ephesians 5: 16.) Let Him know that you are prepared to give whatever it takes to do something that is of eternal value, because it is certain that we can take nothing we have accumulated here with us where we are going!

Twice in the Book of Revelation the Lord refers to His coming in a specific way:

“Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation,
which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.
Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.”
    Revelation 3: 10-11.

“He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly.
Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.”
    Revelation 22: 20.

That word “quickly” in its original form is translated from the word ‘tachu’ from which we get our word ‘tachometer!’ When things start ‘revving up’ and are happening at a faster pace than ever before, know that our beloved Lord Jesus will be coming without delay, very soon, and suddenly!

It cannot be denied that we are certainly living in revved up times with increasing velocity, and as the Lord Jesus told us earlier: “When these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.” Luke 21: 28.

And so having seen what is happening at eye level and finding nothing but chaos and desperation here, let us look up because this is from there our Beloved will soon come.

Now is the time to make sure you are ready, therefore do not delay and suddenly and without warning find yourself left behind to face what is soon to happen upon this earth and civilisation that once said “We do not want ‘this’ man to reign over us.”

"It is high time to awake our of sleep:
For now is our salvation nearer than when we believed."
    Romans 13: 11

    09_Sept_Salute Rufus

    Salute Rufus
    (Romans 16: 13)

This might appear to be a rather unusual title for a Blog, and Rufus might be an obscure character that not many people know about, but the very fact that his name appears in Scripture with such high esteem must be important.

His name is featured among a list of names at the end of the book of Romans and I was intrigued because I could remember his name being mentioned somewhere else, and so I did a bit of detective work and searched for him until I found him.

“And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country,
the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.”
    Mark 14: 31.

Rufus - one of the sons of Simon who had a very important role to play in the life, or rather the end of the life of the Lord Jesus. He was compelled to bear the cross of Jesus behind Him. While the Lord Jesus was bearing the full weight of the cross at the front, Simon was behind carrying the part of the cross that would have been dragging in the dirt!

Such a task was the last thing on earth anyone would want to do, and such a man as Jesus who was about to be crucified was the last one that many would want to be associated with. But there was something about Simon, and his willingness to do this task made him an honourable man.

What an impact this must have made upon the life of this man. He would never forget the day when he walked with Christ to the place of His crucifixion. I wonder if he understood back then that Jesus was going to the cross to bear in His body the wrath of God for his sins. He would have heard the words of Jesus praying to His Father on the behalf of the Roman soldiers who were nailing Him to the rugged cross: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." Maybe he was there to witness the darkness that came over the scene, and to hear the conversation that took place between Jesus and the repentant man on the cross next to him. Perhaps he heard Jesus cry with a loud voice: "it is finished!"

Whatever happened on that day, the task that he was given to do must have made a deep impression upon his soul that changed the course of his life forever.

He would never be the same man again. From that moment he would become a different man, a different husband, a different father! And one of his sons by the name of Rufus was among those named in the Scriptures as being a close acquaintance of the Apostle Paul!

Isn't this an amazing thing! So little is recorded about both of these men - Simon and his son Rufus, and yet they are important to God who made sure that their names were written with indelible ink in the Word of God.

How important it is to understand that our lives as insignificant as they may appear to be, are making an impact on others around us for good or for bad.

Perhaps those people maybe our children, perhaps they are siblings, schoolmates, work colleagues, neighbours… the list could go on and on. Perhaps our demeanour may be affecting the life of somebody we just don't know. Consider the Cashier at the Supermarket, the Road Sweeper, the Postman, or the man who cleans the windows…

What is most important for us to remember is that every life is precious no matter how great or small they may appear to be in human estimation, and every soul is precious to God!

Whatever it was that Rufus did that caused the Apostle to encourage others to salute him must have been important to him, and he publicly acknowledged this man. And the kind of man that he had become all started with a godly father who wasn't afraid to be associated with the crucified Christ.

What an impact we can have and who knows how greater impact that could be if only we could demonstrate our unswerving devotion to that same Christ that Simon was devoted to.

I had occasion sometime ago to make a statement that I standby even to this very day, and it goes something like this: “Don't ever allow us to be overcome by the pressure this world demands upon us for our children. Do not let us ever feel that we must go beyond the simplicity of a godly walk to persuade our children to walk with God, because …

The greatest thing a parent could ever do for their children
is to give to them a father and a mother who is completely satisfied with Jesus.”

This is the rock solid foundation that not only a child needs but we all need! Simon was a man who was plunged right into the very depths of the world's rejection of Christ, but he didn't refuse such a task, and I believe he is probably eternally glad that he was the one compelled "to bear the cross after Jesus."

But while writing this article, I have noticed something else - nobody would have chosen to have done such a task is this; I mean who would wake up in the morning with the desire to carry the foot end of the cross behind a flogged, bleeding and rejected man who is being jeered and mocked every step of the way?

Perhaps there are some tasks that we would very much prefer not to do. But do not despise the task, if it is associating you with the crucified Christ. Contrary to public opinion, it is an absolute honour to be in such a position. It's what matters to God that is most important, and He will make sure that honour is given to whom honour is due!

If it is therefore true, (and so it is), that everything that we do has an impact on somebody else, then our little lives are important after all!

So be encouraged all of you who are feeling insignificant and unappreciated, because God values you, and your willingness to be associated with the One that the world has rejected brings to Him great pleasure, and comes with great reward.

Let us therefore have His pleasure, His honour and His glory as the primary objects and motive behind all that we do and say… after all, look what He has done for us!

He was not averse to being associated with the likes of us. He did not shy or turn away from going to the cross on our account, but rather was steadfastly minded to go straight there without any diversion.

Therefore such love demands everything that we have and all that we are in response. May we not be ashamed of the One who loved us and gave Himself for us, and may our lives be such an influence for good to those around us so that many more characters like Rufus maybe raised up to be honoured and saluted. :)

  5.

“Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine.
And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.”
    John 21: 12

A small company of disciples of the Lord Jesus returned to their fishing boats they left a while ago. It was a while since they had seen the risen Lord and perhaps a little despondency had crept in. Peter announced: “I’m going fishing”, and the others followed.

It was a long disappointing night of fruitless work. They caught nothing! What a waste of their time and effort! As they rowed back to the shore feeling defeated and exhausted, they caught sight of ‘a Man on the shore’! He called out to them, asking them if they caught anything? Of course they had to tell Him that they hadn’t.

At this point they didn’t know who this Man was! But He said something to them that was odd and yet familiar: “Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find.” We don’t read of any conversation going on between the Man on the shore and the exhausted fishermen - they just threw the net into the sea as suggested, and this time they caught a great haul of fish!

Then the penny dropped as it were; it was John who recognised who the Man was, and said to Peter: “It is the Lord!” Peter, forgetting all about the fish, and how tired he was, grabbed something to put on to make himself decent, launched himself into the water to get to Jesus as soon as he could! The others brought the boat and their catch to shore.

When they arrived, they saw a fire and the smell of fish and bread cooking wafted from where He was to where they were! How inviting! And after obeying His instructions to bring all the fish ashore, nobody dared question who He was or what He was telling them to do, because they now knew who this Stranger on the shore was.

The disciples knew that their earlier efforts were fruitless. Their energy was spent and they were defeated. And all this because they went back to the life they had been called from to become ‘fishers of men’!

Why did they do this? Was it because they grew despondent waiting for Him after He rose from the dead? They had seen Him a couple of times before, but it had been a while since then. He told them to wait, but for how long He didn’t say! And so they did what came naturally. There was nothing wrong with what they did, but now it was a fruitless work because Jesus had given to them a more noble calling, and they had to wait until He made them ready for this, their new vocation.

None of us like waiting do we? If we are not careful the weight and impact of the Words of God gradually dissolve and we begin to drift back to the life from which we were delivered. Perhaps there is nothing wrong with some of those things we used to do or think … but now the doing of them, the occupying of ourselves with those things we once spent our time doing has become a fruitless waste of our time and energy.

The Lord has given to each of as a high calling … a life that cannot be lived in our own strength or according to our own ability. However, most of us, if we were honest would have to admit have wondered off at some time or other and done our own thing. And what has become of that? Perhaps our lives resemble what was said of the disciples after toiling all night … “That night they caught nothing!” If it was not for this precious account we might feel like bowing our heads in shame and giving up!

But just as He was there for the disciples, so He is there for us.
Bless God that there is ‘A Man on the Shore’ for us also!

Did He reprimand them for not waiting for Him, and for returning to their old life? Was He harsh with these exhausted men? Had He given up on them, like perhaps we would do either on ourselves or someone else? Of course not! He had every right to express His disappointment in His failing followers but He didn’t. Perhaps this is because the Bible tells us that: “Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.” Psalm 103: 13-14.

This precious account gives to us all hope in the fact that while we still have a few moments of time left, we can do something meaningful and of eternal value with them. Our lives may have left us exhausted, defeated and fruitless, but our Man on the shore is there to give us hope.

Does this give us the license to live careless lives knowing that everything will turn out all right in the end? Absolutely not! The Bible says: “to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” James 4: 17. But it does give to the one with a true and contrite heart the comfort in the knowledge that the same Saviour who came to die in the place of sinners like you and me, receives them all whether we are a lost sinner or a saved sinner!

My beloved Lord Jesus who is gracious and long-suffering and is not willing that any should perish, also extends all the grace necessary for the wondering believer to arrive home in heaven with many treasures awaiting him … or her :)

And so what of all those wasted hours, days, weeks … even years? Is there anything left that we can give to our loving Lord that He will value? How will the moments of time that we have left amount to anything in eternal ages?

My beloved Lord Jesus is a wonderful Restorer. He restores the soul of the wonderer, and He restores 'the years that the locust have eaten.' (Joel 2: 25.) Look at the barren land after the locusts have been free to devour it! My beloved Lord has the incredible ability to restore out of the barren life fruitfulness, as if all those wasted years had never happened.

The Man on the shore took them back as it were to the place where they went astray and brought them back to Himself. Soon they would go in the power of His gracious Holy Spirit with a message that would change the whole world.

Our beloved Man on the shore can do the same for you so that you can prosper both in time and for eternity! Don’t delay - He in abundant grace and mercy is waiting on the shore just for you.
