Does He Care?
“And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.
And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow:
and they awake him, and say unto him,
Master, carest thou not that we perish?”
Mark 4: 37
God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3: 16
The Lord Jesus purposed a journey with His followers across to the other side of the lake where others would benefit from His presence, His teachings and His healing touch. There was no reason to believe that they would never arrive.
What the Lord says, He does! What He
starts, He finishes. What He purposes will always come to pass.
So they safely boarded the ship that was going to take them on their journey and the Lord withdrew Himself to rest for a while. While He slept a few of His disciples did what they knew how to do by nature – they sailed the ship; for they were seasoned fishermen. What they didn’t plan for however was the strange turn of events that were about to happen upon them. Never had they seen a storm they were about to experience, and when it came upon them they feared that they would all perish, such was the storm’s velocity.
They had forgotten the promise of the Lord: “Let us pass over to the other side,” and they had forgotten who He was that was present with them: “He was in the ship.” They had also forgotten His power, the likes of which He was about to demonstrate. All they could think of at that moment was the facts that immediately appeared to them – We Perish! However, nothing could have been further from the truth as they were about to find out.
They did get one vital thing right however; and that was that they came to Him
with their dilemma. After all, there wasn’t anyone else to turn to and nobody
else was needed anyway. In the heat of the moment they doubted His care but He
never rebuked them for their failing faith. Instead He arose and rebuked the
storm with the power of His words:
“Peace, be still,
and when the wind ceased, there was a great calm.”
Mark 4: 39
Those that are in His care and keeping will never perish. He has a plan and a purpose for His people; and we can rest assured of that because of the promise of His abiding presence with us to uphold and to keep each one in His tender care.
But God doesn’t only just care but He loves, and His love is supreme. He proved that when He gave His only begotten Son. God requires only one way for souls to come into the good of his most precious provision and that is to abandon ourselves in complete trust to the only way provided to bring us into a right relationship with Him. Having agreed with God about our sin and repented of it He expects us to trust in His Son fully both with our soul for eternity and trust Him with ourselves for time.
Perishing is a dreadful thing that God’s own people will NEVER know because He is faithful that promised. His presence will be with us always, and by His power He will keep and preserve His people until one soon day we shall see Him face to face.
